Here is an excellent resource for you. Emily Post is like the godmother of etiquette in this country and her wedding etiquette book, now in its fifth edition, is very useful when trying to figure out American wedding customs.

This is a huge question. It could take volumes of books to explain all the customs and rules of American weddings. Also complicating matters is that in America, there are so many regional differences that a wedding in New York would barely resemble one in California or even Georgia. First off, I have to ask if you are planning a wedding, because I think if you’re relations are not American, it would be meaningful to incorporate your own customs. Remember, America is diverse (ethnicity, religion, local traditions), so there is no “typical wedding.”

There really is no “rules” Everything that is said to be “traditional” is not really being done anymore. Couples just plan weddings the way they want things to be done. Some of the changes. Not every wedding is like this.
Most brides do not wear veils. Some brides prefer a colored dress over the traditional white. Rice being thrown has been replaced by blowing bubbles. Some brides prefer to walk themselves down the aisle. If the father is not present in the brides life sometimes the mom or a close family member will walk them down the aisle. They no longer need to be in a church. Anywhere you dream about having a wedding it can be done. Gardens, a backyard, while skydiving! I went to a wedding just last weekend were the bride did not do the bouquet toss and the groom did not do the garter toss. That was a first for me. you can pick any colors you want! Any flowers.
Pick up a bride magazine and you will get tons of different ideas! http://www.theknot.com is a good website too!

Here is some articles about American weddings!!

That is a very big and broad question and i think the best answer depends on the person you ask.
